Getting Ready for Your Flu Vaccination

Our annual flu vaccination programme is getting underway, and we are looking forward to welcoming eligible patients to our flu clinics.

Flu can be much more serious than a heavy cold, particularly for older people, pregnant women and those with certain long-term health conditions. Having your vaccination each year is one of the best ways to protect yourself from becoming seriously unwell and can also help protect those around you.

Attending one of our flu clinics?

Our flu clinics are extremely busy, with large numbers of patients being vaccinated. To help us keep queues to a minimum and make your visit as quick and straightforward as possible, we have produced a Flu Vaccination Frequently Asked Questions guide.

Please take a few minutes to read the guide before you attend your appointment. It answers many of the questions we are commonly asked, including:

  • Can I have my vaccination if I have a cold or am taking antibiotics?
  • Can the flu vaccine give me flu?
  • What if I have an egg allergy?
  • Can I have the vaccine if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
  • What if I take blood-thinning medication?
  • Can I have another vaccination at the same time?
  • What side effects might I experience?
  • Do I need to wait at the practice afterwards?

Help us keep the clinic moving

There are a few simple things you can do to help us vaccinate everyone safely and efficiently:

Please arrive at your allocated appointment time rather than arriving significantly early.

Wear a short-sleeved or loose-fitting top so that we can easily access the top of your arm.

Have your arm ready when you reach the vaccinator where possible.

Please tell the vaccinator about any important allergies, previous serious reactions to vaccines or relevant changes to your health.

Most importantly, if you can no longer attend, please cancel your appointment as early as possible. This allows us to offer the appointment to another eligible patient.
